National Gynecologic Oncology Clinical Research Enrollment Down 90% – A New Paradigm

The attached New York Times article nicely summarizes the failure of a 40-year government funded gynecologic cancer clinical trial program; The Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG). GOG failed due to fundamental structural flaws. $14 million of annual funding was concentrated in a small number of sites. The funding did not “pass downstream” to many researchers. The 2nd and last director was elderly with no plan to “bring in new blood” to run the organization. The system was inefficient, bureaucratic, political, and not patient, doctor or nurse friendly. Studies were designed using a committees’ that produced “sausage protocols” that many patients and doctors were not willing to participate in.

The Women’s Cancer Research Foundation (WCRF) research model could increase national gynecologic oncology clinical research twenty-fold. It is patient, physician and nurse friendly. 90% of funds get to the researchers. It rewards researchers for their critical role. In finding new cancer cures. America needs a new women’s cancer research paradigm. WCRF would be a great new model for the entire country.
