IBM/WATSON LOSES TO DOCTORS

IBM spent billions of dollars trying to get their Watson supercomputer to be able to make medical decisions. Watson failed. In oncology, Watson had a significant serious error rate. A good physician is consistently better at correctly solving clinical problems than Watson.

Watson was able to beat two Jeopardy super champion players. It also has beaten chess grand masters. Why doesn’t Watson work for cancer care?

The problem that #IBM/#Watson ran into in #oncology is that we do not have all of the data to make clinical decisions. A computer requires a full set of data for it to be able to process it and come up with a logical answer. The amount of #data in medicine is rapidly increasing but in many clinical situations key facts are missing. Those are the situations where good physicians are able to look at all the data that is available, examine the patient, get to know the patient and their family and put together the pieces in the best way possible. That is why medicine is both an art and a science.

This also has implications for #Medicare, #insurance companies, HMOs and other groups that want to create a “recipe book” for #doctors to follow. For simple clinical problems that can work. However, for critical, complicated clinical decision-making, the “recipes” would not consistently produce optimal clinical decisions. That is why doctors should be credentialed to be sure that they are good doctors and then doctors must be trusted to put the pieces of the #puzzle together on their own. There are plenty of safeguards in the system, such as malpractice suits, hospitals tracking complication rates and simple word of mouth directing patients away from “bad doctors”. People are still smarter than computers when it comes to #medicine.
